22-24.09.2010 The 6th International Seminar on Advances in Resistance Welding
New inventions and innovative developments in recent years have enabled new possibilities for joining challenging materials such as advanced high strength steels, aluminium alloys and magnesium alloys. These advances have drawn greater attention from manufacturers towards new applications of resistance welding techniques. With extensive research and development by material suppliers, welding equipment manufacturers and industrial end users, it is obvious to see that resistance welding remains one of the most efficient and competitive joining technologies in automotive, aerospace, electrical, electronics, white goods and other metal processing industries.
There have been great demands from industry to follow through with the recent advances and to update users with the technology available in the field of resistance welding. In order to meet the demands of industry, a series of international seminars on Advances in Resistance Welding have been initiated by SWANTEC since 2000 and now organised as a biennial activity of the Innovative Resistance Welding Network – INNOWELD.NET. The first seminar was held in October 2000 in Copenhagen, Denmark; the second was held in November 2002 in Aachen, Germany; the third was held in November 2004 in Berlin, Germany; the fourth seminar was held in 2006 in Wels, Austria; while the fifth was held in September 2008 in Toronto, Canada. All lectures at the seminars were given by well-known experts specially invited from leading institutes and companies in the field of resistance welding with a full coverage of all important topics on materials, welding equipment, innovations and the latest industrial applications. The seminars have been well attended, with over 80 participants in 2008, with more than 80% of them coming from industry.
The 6th seminar will be organized by SWANTEC and Harms-Wende on September 22nd -24th 2010 in Hamburg, Germany. Approximately 20 lectures will be given by invited experts in the field of resistance welding from leading institutes and companies to cover the latest inventions and developments in resistance welding with special emphasis on adaptive welding controls and applications for challenging materials which are difficult to weld e.g. aluminium alloys and advanced high strength steels, etc.

The event is organised by the four manufacturing related European projects MASMICRO, AFFIX, EUPASS and XPRESS. For XPRESS this is the first time to go public: Besides a general project presentation and a poster session, the XPRESS technology will be shown in a live demonstration. In this demonstration, a worker performs a welding job in cooperation with a Welding intelligent production unit. With this demonstration XPRESS leaves the world of functional mock-ups: Both a real welding gun and a real welding control unit are used for the first time.
All projects are funded under the 6th Framework Program. In the focus of interest are goals, objectives, challenges and the results achieved so far. Furthermore, this event aims at discussion and brokerage for future activities in the field of production technology.

XPRESS celebrates its 1st anniversary
01.01.2008
The first 12 months of XPRESS have been reviewed successfully:
The first project year was dedicated to the definition of the main concepts of the Manufactron Framework. Several specifications have been worked out for the design of the Production intelligent units, the embedding of real-time techniques, access to knowledge bases etc. Furthermore, different already existing technologies have been proven suitable for the Manufactron communication and Manufactron knowledge bases.
Great effort has been made in the field of human integration. Video tracking software and hardware have been developed, and different quality monitoring methods for the precision monitoring of the workers tool position (by the usage of Hidden Markov Models and knn-Analysis) have been investigated.
The highlight of the first year was the presentation of a first functional sample of the worker integration for the video tracking of a welding gun during the 1st Year Partners Meeting.
6./7.12.2007 XPRESS 12 months partner meeting in Turino, Italy
The 12 months partner meeting was held in Turino, Italy. The 33 participants reviewed the results achieved so far. A highlight was the presentation of the first functional sample. Creativity workshops were dedicated to the planning of the next steps to take. The visit to the Mirafiori BIW assembly lines of FIAT provided a hands-on insight to the challenges of flexible manufacturing in the Automotive sector.
The conclusion of this meeting was: XPRESS runs, the motivation is high and within the consortium Europe grows together a little further.
16./17.01.2007 Kick-off Meeting in Hamburg, Germany
31 participants took part in the Kick-off Meeting in Hamburg. They did not only have the possibility to get to know each other but could also get to know the project officer from the European Commission for XPRESS. From the planning point of view the Kick-off Meeting was very productive: All partners went home with a list of tasks and lot's of enthusiasm to get XPRESS running.
